Editing Portfolio

Project |01

Published Anthology

During my time in the editorial department of the MSU Press, I helped edit an anthology about Michigan's Upper Peninsula, communicating with a large number of different authors respectfully and ensuring consistency in the overall collection by unifying diverse voices and writing styles.

Journal submission

When I first read through this academic paper for my client, I noticed that the same words were often used multiple times in the same paragraph, so I changed several words to vary the language. Several expressions were a bit too informal, so I changed them to reflect the formal tone of the rest of the paper. Sometimes sentences became wordy and redundant, so I eliminated parts that were too similar and consolidated the remaining parts so that they would form one complete idea. I also focused on consistency among the titles and italicizing them according to the Chicago Manual of Style. This editing sample demonstrates my attention to language issues and skill with track changes.

The State News articles

These two articles are samples from my time at The State News, where I was responsible for editing articles according to AP style, helping create engaging headlines, checking facts, and proofreading the newspaper pages after they were printed.

Fiction manuscript

I was asked to copyedit the first chapter of a novel titled The House Forgotten. Because this is a work of fiction, I tried to be especially careful to preserve the voice and style of the author. My primary focus while copyediting this piece was keeping the tone consistent and eliminating anything that could confuse readers.

Typecoding and design

This book was typecoded by many different copy editors. Thus, collaboration was an essential part of this editing process to ensure consistency. Because I was not the only one typecoding this manuscript, it was essential for me to communicate with the other editors to make sure our codes were consistent. For my part, I typecoded an entire chapter, paying close attention to different kinds of formatting such as bulleted lists to ensure that my codes were clear for the designer.
